National Alliance on Mental Illness New Hampshire (NAMI) provides education, support, and advocacy for people with serious mental illness and their families.

This one-hour webinar from NAMI discusses risk and protective factors, warning signs, and what to do if someone may be at risk for suicide. You’ll understand actions to take when there is immediate concern and resources in the community that can help create a safety net for people at risk of suicide.

Words matter. Use person-centered language.

In any context, it is important that an individual feels seen as more than their mental health condition, illness, or other challenges.

Describing a person by their mental or physical condition is de-humanizing, reducing them to the sum of their symptoms. This problem is exacerbated by the way mental health is portrayed in the media, resulting in stigmatization, negative thoughts, and a more difficult recovery.

Use these examples of person-centered language to support those around you. Remember to put the person first.
